Prologue

Hi, I'm an architect, and this is the chronicles of my journey through designing my own little abode in the back of my parent's house. What we call an "Accessory Dwelling Unit" or "ADU" in industry terms. This is happening as we speak. As I begin this inaugural blog on a sunny afternoon in April of 2023, I have a preliminary plan, and a whole bunch of hopes and fears, issues and concerns, already lining up.  

I will do my best to write from the perspective of a real person. Not some design professional who knows everything. Not a lifestyle guru trying to be the next influencer. But a real person problem-solving, troubleshooting, and finding answers as I go. 

Home building/renovation is both a technical and emotional process. There is no right way. No textbook or design primer at your local library can ever predict your experience. Design is just like life. You can plan the heck out of whatever you want. And you take the next step. And then the next step. And then the next. And you end up where you are - not where you initially planned. But hopefully, unexpectedly, a place where you know exactly where you should be. 

Can't wait to share this journey with you. I won't promise that I won't cry or swear. Or make fun of my peers for your entertainment. Or take a pause to show you a funny video cuz I just need the laughs. Deal? Here we go.
